Trailblazer Sam McCullum’s legacy spans far beyond the field—with a career rooted in firsts and a continued commitment to service.

After being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 1974, Sam joined the Seahawks in the 1976 expansion draft—where he caught the very first touchdown in franchise history on a pass from fellow Trailblazer Jim Zorn.

Since retiring in 1983, Sam’s been a steady advocate for player wellness, serving on the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle NFL Player Retirement Board and staying active in the NFLPA Former Players community, helping athletes navigate life beyond the game.

He’s been recognized across his home state of Montana, earning induction into the Montana State Hall of Fame (1993), Kalispell Legends Wall of Fame (2011), and Montana Football Hall of Fame (2018).

We’re proud to welcome Sam back as a 2025 Birch Golf Classic Trailblazer!
